‘MUM, DEMENTIA & I'

Elizabeth Anang was diagnosed with dementia in March 2013 shortly after her husband passed away. After witnessing the effects that poor care had on her mother, her daughter Annemarie moved in with her soon afterwards to become her full-time carer and began to capture with her camera, the changes and challenges they went through in an attempt to understand and support her mothers needs.

'Mum, Dementia & I' is a photography exhibition that explores the reality of living with dementia. It gives an intimate insight into daily life for a mother, her daughter and how the two attempt to make sense of the changes in their lives caused by the arrival of dementia. Glimpses into their coping methods, as well as the difficulties encountered with the introduction of carers into their home, can be seen. The public are invited to view these personal photographs and engage in the issues surrounding social care as we become a nation that has increasingly high life expectancies and yet the way older people are cared for continues to be a concern. The exhibition also includes a short video featuring the mother and daughter which was broadcast by London Live.

The exhibition is supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England and the Elephant Trust. Citizens UK, who are campaigning for better Social Care, are exhibtion partners. Any donations made at this free exhibition will be given to the Alzheimer's Society - Registered Charity No. 296645.

This exhibition is the first in 'THE REAL PICTURE' series, curated by Annemarie Anang - a unique series of photography exhibitions that bring to the forefront everyday real issues surrounding ordinary people, providing a forum to engage and discuss themes and circumstances that are rarely given their deserved platform.

Mum has exceptional hearing but can be disturbed by the sounds she no longer recognises.

To support daily living, I have labelled many items in the kitchen to help mum make sense of her environment, well as help her carers to navigate.

The Public

We have all experienced loss at some stage of our lives; be it the break-up of a relationship, the passing away of a beloved family pet, the death of someone close or the decline of a friendship, loss touches all our lives. Annemarie Anang's photographs tell a story of a personal journey taken following the loss of a parent, both emotionally and physically.

The public are invited to participate in the exhibition by contributing their own photograph or small memorabilia related to loss, whether is it about the passing away of a loved one, a missed opportunity or however the member of public wish to interpret loss. Empty frames will be on display where the public can do so.

Lost & Found aims to allow visitors to find something through their time at the exhibition. It could be simply enjoyment of the images on display, inspiration from the growing content of the public frame, engagement with other visitors, or leaving the exhibition feeling inspired to spend more time with a loved one.

The Photos

In May 2013 Annemarie Anang travelled with her mother, who had recently been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, to Ghana where her late father had been planning to retire in order to organise his affairs in that country. During the trip she produced a striking and thought-provoking catalogue of photographic work reflecting her emotions at this crucial time of her life.

This exhibition is the second in 'THE REAL PICTURE' series, a unique series of photography exhibitions that bring to the forefront everyday real issues surrounding ordinary people, providing a forum to engage and discuss themes and circumstances that are rarely given their deserved platform.
